We have all heard the saying, “you only have one chance to make a first impression”. When it comes to interviewing for a job, the first impression can make the difference between advancing in the hiring process or receiving the dreaded rejection email. Just a few simple things can make a huge difference.
- Be early!
Every hiring manager will tell you that punctuality is key when interviewing. Being on time means more than parking your car one minute before the interview time. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early to ensure that can find the floor/department of the hiring manager and to ensure you are not delayed by traffic.
- You are making an impression from the moment you arrive!
From the parking attendant to the security guard to the receptionist, you are creating an impression from the moment you arrive. Be kind and friendly to everyone you meet. Turn your phone off when you arrive and don’t look at it again until you have left the property. Know that every moment you are there is part of the interview.
- Dress professionally!
I’m asked every day if a nurse should wear scrubs or street clothes to an interview. My advice is to dress professionally and save the scrubs for your first day of work. If, however, you are coming off a shift or squeezing an interview in over your lunch break, do not feel pressured to change out of scrubs. No matter your personal style or preferences, keep makeup, jewelry and perfume to a minimum for an interview. Think conservative, professional attire.
- Make eye contact!
It cannot be overstated how important eye contact is in a job interview. When you look the hiring manger in the eyes, you show respect and interest. You will also be showing an example of your bedside manner.
