There are thousands of online articles about how to write a resume. We all know the basics: organized, no spelling errors, etc. Once you’ve checked and double checked for the obvious resume issues, take a look at this list. Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference.
- Clearly indicate your location
Recruiters and hiring managers only need your city, state and zip code to determine if you are within a commutable distance from the place of employment. You do not need to have your street address on your resume. If you are in the process of relocating, clearly list the city, state and zip code to which you are moving. Don’t forget to include your anticipated date of relocation.
- Take a look at your email address
Do you have a professional email address? We see so many email addresses that are very personal and do not reflect professionalism. If your email address is very personal or cute or ridiculously long, consider getting a free email address specifically for job hunting.For example, if your email address is [email protected],

- Consider a free online phone number
You may be inclined to include your personal cell phone number on your resume, however, consider a free online phone number for job hunting purposes. The phone number on your resume will be in the database of multiple employers for years to come. An online number allows you to know exactly which calls are from potential employers so you can screen those calls while at work or when you are not able to engage in a phone interview. Once you find the job of your dreams, you may not want to continue receiving calls from potential employers.
- Keep your formatting to a minimum
You have no idea what type of computer a hiring manager or recruiter might be using when they view your resume. There’s also no way to know if they have the updated version of common word processing software. To ensure that your resume can be easily opened and viewed, keep formatting to a minimum and always send it out as a PDF document.
- Print your resume on nice paper and visit employers in person
If you are having trouble finding a job, consider printing your resume on nice paper and delivering it to potential employers in person. Hiring managers and recruiters so rarely hold an actual resume in their hands; it can make a very nice impression.
